What is a HEIC file?

HEIC is the default photo format on iPhone and iPad. Apple uses it because a picture can stay sharp while taking less storage than an older JPEG. That works well in the camera roll.

Once the file leaves the phone, fewer tools can open it. Windows File Explorer often cannot preview it unless an extra codec is installed. Older Android phones and many phone apps have the same gap. Most websites also refuse a HEIC upload and ask for a JPEG instead.

When a JPG is the better file

If the photo stays on your iPhone, leave it as HEIC. Convert it to JPG when you need to send it to someone, or open it in an app, that cannot read the file. These three cases come up most often.

Sending it to Windows or Android

On a Windows PC, a HEIC attachment often will not preview until the recipient installs a codec. On an older Android phone, or in an app that cannot decode HEIC, it shows up as a file that will not open. JPG opens on both.

Uploading to websites

Most websites do not accept a HEIC upload. That includes image-editing tools, online stores, and social media platforms. Convert the photo to JPG, PNG, or WebP first.

Dropping the photo into a document

Slides, Word files, and PDFs are built around JPEG. A print lab may also refuse HEIC. A JPG inserts cleanly and is the file they expect to receive.

Common questions

  • Is this heic to jpg converter free?

    ExpandExpand Hover

Yes. You can convert as many photos as you like in the browser. There is no account and no fee.

  • Does this heic to jpg converter upload my photo?

    ExpandExpand Hover

No. The photo is decoded on this device and the JPG is created here. Nothing is sent to a server for processing.

  • Will this heic to jpg converter reduce quality?

    ExpandExpand Hover

JPEG is a widely supported format, and the quality slider controls how much detail is kept. A higher number stays closer to the original. A lower number makes a smaller file. If you need a lossless file instead, the format menu also offers PNG and WebP.

  • What is the difference between HEIC and HEIF?

    ExpandExpand Hover

HEIF is the container standard. HEIC is the version Apple uses for iPhone photos. This page accepts both file types and saves a JPG.

  • Why will my HEIC file not open on Windows or some Android phones?

    ExpandExpand Hover

Many Windows PCs do not include a HEIC decoder, so File Explorer and email cannot preview the file until a codec is installed. Newer Android galleries, such as Pixel and Samsung, often can open HEIC. Android 8 and earlier, plus many browsers, file managers, and chat apps, still cannot. The file is fine. Saving it as JPG lets those devices and apps show it.

  • Why can't I upload a HEIC photo to a website, store, or social app?

    ExpandExpand Hover

Most online sites do not accept HEIC. Image tools, stores, and social media platforms usually allow only JPG, PNG, or WebP. Convert the photo before you upload. JPG is the default here, and PNG or WebP are in the format menu.

  • How do I convert heic to jpg?

    ExpandExpand Hover

Upload the HEIC, leave the format on JPG, adjust quality if you want, and download. Those are the three steps on this page.
